hodgkin lymphoma treatment
Because standard chemotherapy for Hodgkin's lymphoma may have long-term effects, especially for young people, we are working to develop effective but more mild treatment methods. For young men and women, we make every effort to protect fertility by using therapies that focus on treating cancer but cause minimal damage to the reproductive organs.
If you are diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma, your doctor will discuss the best option for treating it. This depends on several factors, including:
Classification and staging of Hodgkin's lymphoma
If your illness does not respond to previous treatment
If your illness relapses after treatment
Your age
Other medical issues such as heart or kidney disease
Your treatment will be tailored to your needs. One or more of the following therapies can be recommended for treating cancer or helping alleviate symptoms.
chemotherapy
Drug therapy is the main treatment method for Hodgkin's lymphoma. Combination chemotherapy is a mixture of drugs with different properties and is commonly used. The treatment goal for almost all Hodgkin's lymphoma patients is to cure - completely eliminate the disease, so that it will never return.
Radiation therapy
Radiation therapy uses focused energy beams to kill cancer cells. New radiation therapy technologies and extraordinary techniques enable doctors to more accurately target tumors and provide the maximum dose of radiation with minimal damage to healthy cells.
Proton therapy
Proton therapy delivers high-dose radiation directly to the tumor site, minimizing the damage to nearby healthy tissues. For some patients, this treatment is more successful with fewer side effects.
Immunotherapy
Immunotherapy drugs help the body fight cancer, rather than attacking the cancer itself. Sometimes their side effects are less than other treatment methods.
We have pioneered several immunotherapies, many of which have only been found in a few other cancer centers. Immunotherapy treatment methods may include:
Antibody drug conjugates, such as brentuximab and vitamin D
Checkpoint inhibitors, including Navozumab and Pembrolizumab
Biotherapy that produces antibodies to destroy cancer cells
Targeted therapy against cancer cells by using small molecules to block cell survival and reproduction pathways
Stem cell transplantation technology
If Hodgkin's lymphoma does not respond to first-line treatment and relapses, stem cell transplantation may be recommended. Stem cell transplantation is a process of replacing defective or damaged cells in patients with normal blood cells affected by cancer. These transplants can be autologous (stem cells extracted from patients) or allogeneic (stem cells from donors).
We took the lead in using less toxic chemotherapy doses to achieve a higher success rate, which has now become a widely accepted standard.
