Vaginal cancer diagnosis
Diagnostic tests for vaginal cancer
If you have symptoms that could indicate vaginal cancer, your doctor will examine you and ask you questions about your health, lifestyle (including smoking and drinking habits), and family history.
One or more of the following tests can be used to check for vaginal cancer and whether it has spread. These tests can also be used to determine if a treatment is working.
biopsy
The only way to know for sure if you have vaginal cancer is a biopsy. Remove a small piece of tissue and look at it under a microscope. Your doctor may use a colposcope to enlarge the area and make it easier to remove the tissue. The doctor then looks at the area using a colposcope, which is like binoculars with a magnifying glass, or magnifying glass. A small section of the suspect area will be removed.
Imaging tests, which may include:
CT or CAT (computerized axial tomography) scan
Magnetic resonance imaging scan
Positron emission tomography
Chest X-ray
Endoscopy, which may include:
Sigmoid proctoscopy: An endoscope is inserted into the rectum to look at the rectum and colon. A biopsy can be performed during surgery.
Cystoscopy: An endoscope is inserted into the bladder through the urethra. A biopsy can be performed during surgery.
