Pituitary tumor diagnosis

1. Clinical manifestations

Patient's age, sex, symptoms of discomfort after illness, physical changes.

2. Endocrine examination

Since most pituitary tumors have the function of secreting hormones, their clinical manifestations are not obvious, and imaging cannot indicate that pituitary tumor hormones have changed when there is a tumor. Some cases of pituitary tumors can be diagnosed by endocrine testing alone.

3. Imaging

(1) Skull X-ray: This is a relatively primitive diagnostic method, based on changes in sella bone, sella calcification and other changes to determine whether there is tumor and differential diagnosis.

(2)CT scan: It has diagnostic value only for large pituitary tumors, while small pituitary tumors are easy to miss diagnosis. It cannot be used as the primary diagnostic tool for pituitary tumors.

(3)MRI examination: it is an important tool for the diagnosis of pituitary tumor, which can clearly show the relationship between the size, shape, location and surrounding structure of the tumor. Even tumors 2 to 3 millimeters in diameter can show up. However, the signal of some tumors is similar to the surrounding normal pituitary tissue, and the two are difficult to distinguish, and the diagnosis needs to be combined with clinical manifestations and endocrine examination.

4. Pathological examination

This is a reliable diagnostic method with a low misdiagnosis rate. Pathological diagnosis is divided into ordinary section HE staining light microscope observation, can only be used as a general diagnosis, can not distinguish the type of tumor. Immunohistochemical staining, based on the hormone contained in the tumor cells, is highly sensitive, but the misdiagnosis rate is also high. Electron fluoroscopy can distinguish tumor types according to different characteristics of tumor cells, which is rarely used in clinic.
