thymoma diagnosis
If you have symptoms of a thymoma, your doctor will examine you and ask you questions about your health, lifestyle, and family medical history.
However, thymomas usually have no symptoms in the early stages. In fact, many thymoma cases are discovered by chance, for example by finding another condition on a chest X-ray.
Other tests used to diagnose thymoma or monitor the disease's response to treatment include:
Imaging: Imaging tests for thymomas include X-rays, magnetic resonance imaging, and CT scans. While many cancers require a tissue sample to be diagnosed, doctors can usually tell if a patient has a thymoma based on imaging tests.
Biopsy: In a biopsy, a pathologist takes tissue from suspected cancer and studies it under a microscope to aid in diagnosis. Typically, a biopsy is performed by an interventional radiologist using real-time images to guide the needle to the growth site. This needle is used to get a tissue sample. Other times, an open biopsy may be required by surgery.
Blood tests: These tests do not diagnose thymoma, but can help doctors understand the patient's symptoms, including whether the thymoma is causing autoimmune diseases such as myasthenia gravis.
