This meeting is hosted by the Chinese Medical Association and the Neurosurgery Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, and organized by the Affiliated Hospital of Southwest Medical University and the Xinhua Hospital of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. This meeting specially invited national treasure level academicians and academic leaders in the field of neurosurgery to personally visit the venue, providing strategic guidance for the development of pediatric neurosurgery. Academician Zhou Liangfu from Huashan Hospital affiliated with Fudan University, Professor Zhou Dingbiao from General Hospital of the People's Liberation Army of China, Professor Wang Shuo from Beijing Tiantan Hospital affiliated with Capital Medical University, and Professor Ma Jie from Xinhua Hospital affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University Professor Zhao Shiguang from the First Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University, Professor Zhong Ping from Huashan Hospital of Fudan University, and other well-known professors attended the conference. The chairman of the conference, Professor Ma Jie, and the executive chairman, Professor Chen Ligang, the director of neurosurgery affiliated with Southwest Medical University, announced the opening of the conference.
Yizhou Oncology Hospital, as the only tertiary oncology specialized hospital in China that has established a pediatric oncology radiotherapy department, made a brilliant appearance during this conference. Vice President Professor Ren Bin gave a keynote speech titled "Application of Proton Therapy in Children's Brain Tumors", and promoted "Proton Therapy" as a medical method to people from the national non divine medical community, winning many attention. In addition, the Proton Center of Yizhou Cancer Hospital, as a co organizer, also participated in the new book release event organized by Professor Ma Jie, the chairman of the conference and the affiliated Xinhua Hospital of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The voice and information of Yizhou Proton Center were transmitted to medical staff in the domestic and international treatment industry through the conference.
Big talk | Children's tumors are not a scaled down version of adults
Children's diseases are not a scaled down version of adults, "Professor Ma Jie often said, highlighting the difficulties and pain points in treating pediatric neurological tumors and other diseases.
(Professor Ma Jie, President of the Conference and Affiliated Xinhua Hospital of Shanghai Jiao Tong University)
Professor Ma Jie has nearly 20 years of experience as an adult neurosurgeon and adult tumor surgery, as well as nearly 15 years as a pediatric neurologist, focusing on surgical treatment of pediatric brain tumors. Based on scientific research and clinical experience, Professor Ma believes that childhood tumors are different from adults and are not a scaled down version of adults. Children's tumors and adult tumors are two completely different types of tumors, manifested in different pathological characteristics, tumor location, prognosis, etc. This determines that the treatment methods, follow-up, prognosis, and other aspects of children's tumors and adults are completely different.
Professor Ma Jie also stated that after pediatric tumor surgery, proton radiation therapy can better handle tumors in the central nervous system region. Proton radiation therapy has the characteristics of small radiation area and minimal tissue damage, and will play an increasingly important role in the treatment of skull base tumors.
(Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Professor Zhou Liangfu from Shanghai Huashan Hospital)
Professor Zhou Liangfu, an academician of the CAS Member and director of neurosurgery of Shanghai Huashan Hospital, emphasized that a hundred schools of thought should come together for various treatment forms, including proton therapy, so that patients will get benefits and those who do well will go to whom. Benign and friendly competition should be encouraged, rather than grabbing each other's jobs.
Professor Zhou Dingbiao from the Neurosurgery Department of the General Hospital of the People's Liberation Army of China (301 Hospital) also stated that in the treatment of skull base diseases, radiation surgery has made rapid technological progress in recent years, and in the future, radiation surgery and neurosurgery should form a better complementary relationship.
Voice of One Continent | Advantages of Proton Therapy for Children's Tumors
Professor Ren Bin, Vice President of Yizhou Cancer Hospital, emphasized the advantages of proton therapy in pediatric tumors.
(Professor Ren Bin, Vice President of Yizhou Cancer Hospital)
Professor Ren Bin emphasized that malignant tumors in children are one of the main indications for proton therapy. More and more clinical treatment data and dosimetric research results have shown the advantages of proton therapy for children's tumors, especially in reducing a series of adverse reactions brought about by traditional radiation therapy, such as early toxicity, risk of secondary tumor occurrence, impact on neurocognition and growth, radiation related ototoxicity, cardiopulmonary toxicity, etc. The long-term quality of life for children with tumors after treatment is of great significance.
Proton therapy is currently recognized as one of the less harmful treatment methods for radiation therapy in children, with main advantages including:
Reduce radiation toxicity. Proton therapy can reduce the radiation dose to normal tissues around tumors and protect them. It can reduce the risk of acute and late toxicity of radiation therapy and reduce adverse complications. For patients receiving tumor treatment in childhood, it is crucial to minimize the radiation dose to normal tissues.
Better tumor control. Proton therapy focuses the radiation dose on the tumor target area, reducing the cumulative dose to normal tissues around the tumor (compared to photon radiotherapy, proton therapy can reduce the total cumulative dose by about 60%), making it possible to increase the radiation dose to the tumor target area in clinical practice, or proton therapy can be combined with other better toxicity control treatment strategies to achieve better tumor control.
Can improve long-term quality of life. More and more clinical treatment data and dosimetric research results show that proton therapy reduces a series of adverse reactions brought about by traditional radiation therapy, such as early toxic reactions, effects on neurocognition and growth and development, as well as radiation related ototoxicity, cardiopulmonary toxicity, and the risk of secondary tumors. The long-term quality of life for children with tumors after treatment is of great significance.
Reduce the impact on growth and development. Proton radiation therapy has minimal impact on growth and development, as the irradiation volume of normal tissues decreases. On the contrary, IMRT has some worrying complications in this regard, as it does radiate a considerable volume of normal tissue, even at low to medium doses.
The therapeutic advantages of proton therapy for children in Yizhou. Yizhou Cancer Hospital is one of the few tertiary cancer specialized hospitals in China that can carry out proton therapy for children. The proton therapy center adopts the current advanced Belgian IBA Proteus PLUS proton therapy system, equipped with a dedicated proton therapy cabin for children's tumors; The center has a comprehensive integrated solution for pediatric tumor radiotherapy, equipped with professional pediatric anesthesia and sedation related facilities and medical staff. During pediatric treatment, children's stories, background music, anime, etc. are played in a customized manner to soothe their emotions; The center has a strong team of experts with rich experience in proton therapy.
