Non Hodgkin's lymphoma diagnosis
Diagnostic tests for non-Hodgkin lymphoma
If you have symptoms of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, your doctor will examine you and ask you about your health and medical history. One or more of the following tests can be used to check for cancer and whether the cancer has spread. These tests can also be used to determine if a treatment is working.
Lymph node biopsy: A small piece of tissue is removed from a lymph node and viewed under a microscope. Sometimes the entire node is deleted.
Imaging tests, which may include:
X-ray
CT or CAT (computerized axial tomography) scan
Positron emission tomography
Magnetic resonance imaging scan
Blood tests: Determine if the number and appearance of blood cells are normal, and if blood chemistry is normal. If you have been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, certain blood tests may help your doctor determine your subsequent condition.
Bone marrow puncture biopsy
Liver and kidney tests
Echocardiography: Assess the size and function of the heart.
Immunophenotype: Cells in lymph nodes, blood, or bone marrow are examined microscopically to determine the type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma cell.
Lung function test: See how well the lungs are functioning.
